Many teachers know the name 2D Design from their existing classroom setup. TechSoft’s current product page calls its software TechSoft Design V3, formerly 2D Design V2. Forma2D is a separate drawing application from Specialised Laser Systems.
If you are searching for a TechSoft 2D Design alternative, focus on the lessons, devices and output files you need. A familiar project is a useful starting point for comparing software.
What can you explore in Forma?
- Precise 2D drawing: lines, curves and shapes, exact dimensions, grids, snapping and node placement.
- Shape and lettering preparation: unite, subtract, offsets, repeats and text converted into closed outlines.
- Image work: bitmap tracing, line detail, dithering and a camera capture workflow in the browser edition.
- Browser access: an account-based edition designed for modern browsers, including school Chromebooks without a Linux installation.
- Local projects: editable .forma files and local browser recovery, with SVG and DXF for supported file exchange.
Can I open my existing 2D Design files?
Forma does not directly open native TechSoft .dtd or .3vs project files. Keep the original files and use a supported exchange format for suitable artwork.
TechSoft lists DXF import and export among its features. Forma supports a subset of ASCII DXF entities; binary DXF is not supported. Export a representative drawing from the original software, import it into Forma and inspect the result. Complex effects, text, grouped content or unsupported entities may need attention. This is a file exchange workflow, not a promise of complete project conversion.
A useful trial is built around your own lesson
- Choose a small, familiar project. Include lettering, a few curves and at least one measured feature.
- Recreate or exchange the artwork. Compare drawing, snapping, editing and the clarity of the interface for pupils.
- Use the intended devices. Check your managed Chromebooks or tablets, account access, local saving and camera policy.
- Complete the output workflow. Explore direct output to a Specialised laser, or exchange SVG/DXF artwork for an existing workflow. Verify dimensions, paths and the intended operations.
- Review the practicalities. Discuss named-user access, Windows installation, volume licensing and the support your department needs.
Choose around the whole workflow
Drawing tools are one part of the decision. TechSoft describes integrated output to a range of its supported machines. Forma combines drawing and job preparation with direct output to the Specialised laser range. SVG and DXF exchange is also available for other workflows. Explore the complete design-to-machine experience as part of your demonstration.
Forma is being developed with an emphasis on a clear interface, browser access, touch input and straightforward precision drawing. Arrange a school demonstration to assess those features against your actual classroom requirements.
